  1. The intonation is important because it defines what we mean. It depends on how we use it, is the message we pass on to others. There are two types of intonation: Falling Intonation "upward" y Rising Intonation “downward” movement. Emotions are expressed by the intonation and use depending on which we can determine if the statement is a question, an assertion, if it has doubts, anger, fear, love, etc. The short questions have both types of intonation; because it can be expressed as simple or specific questions.

  2. Hi profesor:

I saw the video and I think it was very interesting because it said a lot of things that I haven't thought before. The first one was when she compare our intonation with melody. That our intonation has to types of notes, the high notes and low notes. So thats mean that we are always singing. That the intonation helps us create the music of our language, and that with out intonation our voice wil be flat, with no misic and "sabor".

This documental is very interesting because it can help us with our firts language too. I never realize that we can tell so much just with the way we use our tone of voice. We can tell if we are happy, angry, asking something or that we are done speaking and is the other persons turn. You can know too, how the other person is felling and what he wants to know. The intonation is so important, because it is a very a important part of our communication. The only thing that we need to do, is to know when to rise or low your tone of voice.

Profersor I was chatting with Betsy and she aggreed with me that this kind of video help us understand the language and the way we communicate. We need to pratice more so we don't get scared by speaking this language, that is our second language and for my opinion a very elegant one. I wish I have persons that speak the language around me, so I can practice and don't forget the litter bite that I know.

I hope you have a great weekend.

  3. I had never pay attention to that. but now that i kown it i can make differences in the pitch depending the type of statement i want to said or talk about. I know that we have melody in our voice and that the way we use it gives information about us, especially what we are thinking and also our feelings in that moment.

If you know what word is the stressed one it gives you an idea how your pitch will be or go, i think that if we can identify those words we can use a right pitch but always depending in the type of statement.

  4. Intonation is how you express your self to others using your voice tone. With the intonation you can show your mood or feelings. We don't give importance to the intonation, whow ever, after this video you can understand several things from the language. Intonation is importan to send the corret message to the correct peson. At work you usually use a kind of intonation but at home is different. So from now we have to be concern about this theme.

    Great weekend for all!!!

  5. The intonation is necessary in communication. It's a change in pitch within a group of words, is a long line of melody. The two types of intonation are ; falling intonation and rising intonation. The intonation is how we express ourselves and how we talk and we want to express something. Determines whether we are asking a question or just want to express. The concept of the intonation that presents the video is very complete and helps us understand the importance of this.

In this unit I could observe and learn about the development of the ability to use the falling and rising intonation patterns accurately in their own discourse. I could see, think and hear the different pitch sounds which were high and low by the verb. Listen to the difference in tone when there is a conversation. The difference when you talk to stress the intonation is taller and stronger than when you're normal is more gentle and relaxing. When normal intonation is heard as a melody because it is softer and under. The intonation is necessary that helps us improve communication our and interact with others.

  7. Intonation is important because is help create the music of a language. We can also communicate with others. There are two types of intonation: Rising intonation and Falling intonation. When we use different intonation patterns we can express our emotions, feelings, attitudes and we can also give responses to others. Tag questions have two types of intonations: rising intonation because when the speaker is not sure of the answer he/she might get. Falling intonation when speaker expects the listener to agree.

  12. After seeing the video presented I really can see the importance of proper expression. Good intonation is necessary to convey a clear and correct message to the person who listens to us. On the video we have two types of intonation rising, with which we can express surprise, admiration and to make yes or no questions when we're not sure what it will be the response. The other is falling which is used when is providing an idea that you know is correct. Also we have tag questions in these you may use both intonations because it depends of the response that you expect to receive. Although the video refers to the words stress and differences in these and the intonation, I think one complements the other and with the proper utilization of both forms we can communicate effectively. The video was very interesting and easy to understand.

  13. Intonation is the melody of language. The way words flow deppending on the message we want to transmit and ho we stress those words help us to understand the mood of the person who is transmiting the message. I really loved the comparison of music and intonation in speaking, but in intonation beyond falling and rising patterns with accuracy there are feelings. Inever paid attention of how important intonation was. This unit is going to help me a lot on my conversational english practice.

Rising intonation is used when expressed affirmation and Falling intonation is used when expressed negation .Tag questions used two types of intonation because the questioner does not know if it negative or positive.

  17. The language we speak is phonetic and melodious, specially our Latin language. Intonation transmits differences of expressive meanings (e.g. surprise, anger, disgusting and others). If we speak the same way all the time it will be a boring conversation. So we have to give some melody or perhaps a little of rhythms to our speech. Depending of the intonations we give to what we are saying will transmit the emotions or our feelings to others. No matter if the intonation of our voice is in raising or falling mode this can distinguish the phrase or sentence from another, making our communication effortless and without barriers.

  18. The video is interesting because one understands how to express it right mind and carry the right message. There are Many times when I speak in English do not understand why not have a good intonasion and do not understand, however priate speak it properly slow and I find it easier to understand. Personally, I ignored many things that was shown in the video. Now the important thing is I tend to pronounce correctly the sentences. So we carry the message corect.

  19. The intonation is important to us because it can change the meaning of an utterance. To keep a loud and clear message about what is being communicated is to be announced in the same way. In this video she used her falling intonation and stress work; the pitch of her voice goes down at the end of the utterance, but before it goes down, it rises on the vowel sound of the most important word that is stressed. Also when she mention the items for the job she used the rising intonation. People can see how you feel (happy, angry, anxious, etc.) when you are giving a speech by the intonation you are using.
The tag question with rising intonation, it sounds like a real question. But if our intonation falls, it sounds more like a statement that doesn't require a real answer just an agreement.

  20. Intonation is important because it gives sense to the conversation. Without intonation it would be all plain and we wouldnt undestand what we are trying to comunicate. There are two types of intonation: falling and rising. Falling intonation means that the pitch decreases with time and rising intonation means the pitch of the voice increases over time. With intonation we can express feelings like attitudes, happiness and sadness. In question we can have two different types of intonation because we need to make clear that we are starting a question and that we finish the question and we are specting an answer.

There are some times when we want to expresses a emotion but, we talk with the wrong intonation and we don't expresse want we want. The tow types of intonation, Falling and rising are very important.I cannot imagine humans talking without any kind of intonation,we wolud sound like robots. With intonatin we can determine tthe kind of statement or what we fell, if it is love, anger, sadness etc. Thanks to this unit, now I can expresse better so that the people that hear me can know exactly what I want or what I fell.

  23. The intonation is very important because that creates the melody of language. It helps us communicate the message we want to others such as our emotions and affirmations. If we didn't have intonation our voice would be flat. There are two types of intonation, falling intonation and rising intonation. They are like musical notes where there are high and low notes. In falling intonation the pitch of the voice goes down. But in rising intonation the pitch of the voice is going up. The intonation can express different emotions such as joy, sadness, confirm or deny something. In the case of tag questions we use the two types of intonation. For example when someone is unsure of an answer use falling intonation, but when a person is speaking and wants the listener will agree used rising intonation. The video is interesting because learn how to express that we want.

  24. I think that intonation helps you understand a speakers' feelings and attitudes. It is an important part of communication. Without intonation we speak and our voice would sound very flat. It would make our sentences boring and dull.

Falling intonation is a pattern in which your voice falls to a low pitch by the end of a thought, group or statement. It communicates certainty and completion. Rising intonation is a pattern in which your voice rises to high pitch by the end of a thought, group or statement. It can also communicate uncertainty and lack of finality.

I never had pay attention to that point and the difference the pitches make in the way we talk and that also we can be certain or not, can express surprise or dissapointment just with the tone of voice we use.

About the way we ask tag questions we can manage the pitch considerating the intention and also the answer we want to listen. If you want that someone to agree you use a falling intonation but if you don't know if someone want to agree you will use a rising one.

Finally, I also think that vdeos like that help us to improve and learn details that will make the difference in the way we communicate.

  25. Intonation is about how we say things, rather than what we say. Without intonation, it's impossible to understand the expressions and thoughts that go with words. Intonation conveys both meaning and attitude, so when a speaker gets the intonation wrong, we can be misunderstood as sounding rude or demanding when this is not intended. we use the tone to show emotion or to ask questions. It is important to recognize the meaning behind the tones used in conversation, and to be able to use them so there not going be misunderstandings between the speaker and the listener. The video teach about the importance intonation when we speak.

  26. Hello everyone,

By viewing this video, I wonder, in a conversation, as you might know if we're doing a question, or are we saying a phrase, or trying to say some other message, if we do not use intonation. We should know how to use intonation every time we speak, in order to deliver a clear message.

That's why we must use our voices properly, in high and low, depending on the message we want to carry. The video shows that we have to talk as if we were singing, with a great melody. Not having a good melody, speaking, we are not talking correctly and the message does not arrive properly.

With videos like this, we find it much easier to understand this great language.

I hope you are all well,

  27. Hi everyone:

Just want to review some points I though where important about intonation.

First of all, I consider that intonation is as important as words itselves. You can choose the correct words to express what you want, but, if you give an unadecuate intonation to the whole sentence, you can change the meaning or intention to it.

There are two types of intonation. The Falling Intonation, which should be used in Wh questions, whenever you have certainty of something or you want to send a signal of completion of the message. The other one is the Rissing Intonation. This one should be used with Yes/No Questions, when you are nameing items on a list or you are offering choices.

As almost everything in life, rules have some exceptions. For example, as I mention, Wh questions should have a falling intonation, but, if you want to express surprise or that you didn't quite heard the message, a Rissing Intonation should be used instead. When asking Tag questions, if you are not sure, you should use a Rising Intonation. On other hand, if you are sure of what you are saying, you must use a Falling Intonation. On Yes/No questions, changing the Rissing Intonation for a Falling Intonation could send a sign of abruptness.

Correct Intonation is an important key to know the emotions we are feeling when we send the spooken message. As a Rissing Intonation would express surprise or admiration a Falling Intonation could express anger or dissapointment. "Words" are the cream in between two "Intonation" cookies. Togheter, they would always de cookies, but the "Intonation" you use, would give the flavor to it.

In my opinion this Unit had been one of the most important and usefull of all. The videos and literature definitely help me very much to understand how important is Intonation to the spoken languaje. Excellent resourse, KEEP IT UP PREFESSOR!!!THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
